It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sonny Moak. Sonny joined his heavenly father on Jan. 5, 2008. Sonny was a dedicated Scouter since the 1980s; however, his involvement in Scouting dated back to his youth where he enjoyed Sea Scouts. As an adult, he joined the Bayshore District to give back to the program that he so cherished as a youth. His involvement occurred at many levels: unit, district and council. Even though he and his wife, Lynda, had only daughters, this did not impede his dedication to the program.
Throughout the 1990s, Sonny was very active in serving as District Training Chair and helping at district events in numerous capacities. He was also a distinguished Commissioner for many years specializing in unit recharters before the age of interent rechartering. He would hand check every unit’s recharter in the district for accuracy.
He spent most of his scouting time involved with Troop 268, where he actively served as Chartering Organization Representative and Committee Chair.
Sonny also made a significant contribution in the Order of the Arrow. He was elected into the Order in 1990, became a Brotherhood member in 1992. In 2002, he was recognized with the Order’s highest honor, that of Vigil Honor. He was given the Indian name UWOTTIYUHI IGALII TLA YATSISULIGOGOI, which means Loyal Friend Who Doesn’t Quit.
As if Sonny were not busy enough, he was a consistent provider of cheerful service and could be found in the Order of the Arrow office at the Scout Service Center downtown several times per week. His contributions, though often behind the scenes, helped make the OA program run smoothly.
Sonny was the recipient of the District Award of Merit, the highest award that can be presented by the district. He was also awarded the Silver Beaver by the Sam Houston Area Council, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a Scouter by a Council.
Not even two separate lung transplants could keep him away from his beloved Scouting program. Sonny will be missed for all of his service, whether out in front leading his troop or behind the scenes making the administration side of Scouting look so easy. But most of all we will miss his friendship and fellowship at all future Scouts.
We offer of sympathy and thoughts to Sonny’s family, his wife and daughters who shared Sonny with us for so many years. We pray that they will see the grace of God in the coming days filled with family, friends and sweet memories of Sonny.
The family is asking that a donation to BSA or LifeGift be made in his name in lieu of flowers.
